Gerald Gardner began the Gardnerian tradition (and modern wicca) as a result of his experiences with Dorothy Clutterbuck and the New Forest Coven. He developed a tradition that combined ritual, ceremonial magick and French Mediterranean Witchcraft. With contributions from Doreen Valiente, this became the basis of the Gardnerian Tradition.
Although the original teachings and rituals are maintained, additional information, spell craft and rituals are added over time, so that the tradition changes with the times yet remembers its roots.
If a group and a student feel a connection, then dedication is usually the first step for the student in joining a group. A student will have studied for at least a year and a day with a teacher before being considered for initiation. In the Gardnerian Tradition, there are 3 degrees, or levels of accomplishment.
The first degree is initiation. Second degree may follow after another year and a day, but often takes much longer. Third degree may take several more years to attain, but then allows the individual to 'hive-off' and form their own coven.
Like many traditions, much of the Gardnerian material is 'Oathbound' which means it cannot be revealed to an individual until that person reaches a certain level within the tradition.
